My Story Begins Here, in Yellowknife

My name is Janet Enge, and I am a proud Métis woman from Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and a current U SPORTS basketball player for the University of Toronto.

Yellowknife raised me. It shaped me, supported me, and gave me my love for the game.

Now, after years of pursuing my athletic and academic goals away from home, I feel a deep responsibility to give back to the community that gave so much to me.

The North of 60 Classic is more than a tournament. It is an opportunity to bring elite basketball, mentorship, and new possibilities back to the North for the next generation of athletes growing up where I once did.

Not to mention expose a group of young women to the wonders of the NWT.

OUR MISSION

When we began building this tournament, our vision was clear: to create a lasting bridge between U SPORTS athletics and Northern youth through sport, mentorship, and cultural connection.

For too long, Northern youth, especially young girls, have faced barriers that many athletes in the South never have to consider. Limited access to elite competition, coaching, and exposure often means leaving home in search of opportunity.

The North is filled with talent, resilience, and potential. So instead of continually asking our athletes to travel thousands of kilometres to experience high-level sport, we asked a different question:

Why not bring that opportunity North?

The North of 60 Classic was created to do exactly that — to bring elite women’s university basketball to Yellowknife while creating meaningful opportunities for mentorship, inspiration, and community connection for the next generation.

This tournament gives our youth something they don’t often get, the chance to see high-level basketball in their own backyard and to be seen by university programs.
